NBA: Where Memes Rarely Happen
It all began in a press conference, after the Houston Rockets have beaten the Portland Trailblazers in the first round of 2009 NBA Playoffs. As Ron Artest (now known as Metta World Peace) was interviewed about his hustle play when he made it to the stands, he jokingly answered that he has been in the stands before (in reference to his brawl during an NBA season game against the Detroit Pistons last November 19, 2004). The crowd responded with an emphatic laugh after giving out his answer. His then-teammate Yao Ming laughed so hard as if he can’t resist it.
Reddit artist “downlow” submitted a drawing that depicted Yao Ming’s face (as seen above), and he confirmed that it was based from the press conference. As the artwork by downlow is shown, many people have commented about the picture, even branding some sarcastic thoughts of using it for conveying any kind of dismissive and senseless argument. Reddit users also see it as a way of responding to an “indifferent” statement. Poof, the Yao Ming meme is born, dated July 11, 2010.
It quickly rose to popularity on August 31st 2010, and it is still widely used as a meme and rage comics up to this time. People in the Internet continuously use the meme as a form of “poking fun” while showing disappointment or disagreement over a certain plain dumb statement or a certain “insurmountable” situation.
